Blacksmithing 104: Introduction to Knife-Making Class

Discover the art of bladesmithing in our Introduction to Knife-Making class! In this hands-on workshop, you’ll forge a traditional Viking-style blacksmith’s knife from a single piece of 1075 high-carbon steel, learning the complete process from raw steel to finished blade.

Designed for aspiring bladesmiths, this class introduces the essential techniques used to create a functional, handcrafted knife while building confidence at the forge. Although beginners are welcome, completion of Blacksmithing 101 (or equivalent forging experience) is highly recommended to ensure you’re comfortable with forge operation, coal fire management, and basic blacksmithing techniques.

What You’ll Learn:

• Forging a blade, tang, handle, and guard from a single piece of 1075 carbon steel
• Proper hammer control and forging techniques to shape and refine your knife
• Heat treating, including hardening and tempering, for strength and edge retention
• Grinding, sharpening, and finishing techniques to complete your knife

Class Details:

Date & Time: August 5, 2026 • 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (7 hours of instruction with a 1-hour lunch break)
Class Size: Limited to 5 students
Age Requirement: Students under 18 must be accompanied by an observing adult (no fee for the adult)
Cost: $150 per student

What to Bring & Wear:

• T-shirts and shorts are welcome. Wear comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty, as forging produces soot, scale, and sparks.
• Closed-toe shoes (required)
• Safety glasses (must bring your own)
• A water bottle
• Your own lunch (or take the opportunity to explore the site during the break)
