Step back in time and experience the art of traditional blacksmithing! Join historical demonstrator Kevin Thompson for a hands-on introduction to this centuries-old craft. In this immersive class, students will learn foundational blacksmithing techniques and create simple yet functional items like S-hooks and wall hooks.
What You’ll Learn:
🔨 The five essential blacksmithing techniques:
- Drawing out
- Tapering
- Bending
- Scrolling
- Twisting
🔥 Additional skills covered:
- Blacksmith shop safety
- Basic finishing techniques
- The history and significance of blacksmithing
- How to build, maintain, and use a coal fire
- Types of fuel and materials used in blacksmithing
Class Details:
📅 Duration: 6 hours (9:00 AM–12:00 PM & 1:00 PM–5:00 PM)
🥪 Lunch Break: 12:00 PM–1:00 PM (Explore the site during the break; bring your own lunch)
💲 Cost: $130 per student
👨🏭 Class Size: Up to 8 students
📌 Registration Deadline: One day before the class date (unless approved by Hagood Mill staff and instructor)

Important Notes:
- Students under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The adult does not need to be a paying student but must remain outside the smithy.
